American Mahjong

American Mahjong is a distinctive style that uses annually updated winning hands. The National Mah Jongg League publishes an official scoring card each year, and players must build one of the listed hands.

Basic Setup

• Players: 4.
• Tiles: 152 tiles, including 8 jokers and 8 flowers.
• Hand: 13 tiles.
• Official card: Legal winning hands are defined by the current year's card.

Core Features

Official Card

The card lists dozens of legal hands. Each year new hands appear and old hands may disappear, keeping the game fresh.

Jokers

Jokers can substitute for tiles in allowed groups. They are powerful, but they follow specific restrictions and cannot simply replace every tile in every situation.

Charleston

Before play begins, players exchange tiles through the Charleston:

1. Pass three tiles to the right.
2. Pass three tiles across.
3. Pass three tiles to the left.
4. Optional additional exchanges may occur depending on the table.

Community Style
